Guidelines for Success
Parent/Guardian | Student

Once children are ready to enter school, parents and guardians often have questions about how to assist them in their educational success. The following suggestions may be useful for families who want some specific ideas.

Parent/Guardian
The involvement of parents (guardians) and other family members is very important for children to be successful in school, as early as pre-kindergarten.

Parents (guardians) can assist their children by providing:

  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Clothing
  • Praise
  • Love
  • Encouragement
Parents can support their children by:
  • Stressing the importance of getting a good education
  • Helping educators understand the child's uniqueness.
  • Participating in the educational decision making process.
  • Sharing in the important decisions that affect their children.
  • Participating in parent advisory councils.
  • Serving on the decision making committees, and other school based parent organizations.
  • Sharing the good things the school does for children with others.
Parents should teach their children to be:

Respectful:

  • Speaking in conversational tones, without anger or hurting other people's feelings.
  • Not interrupting while others are speaking.
  • Taking turns to speak.
  • Making eye contact while speaking.
  • Using good manners such as "thank you", "please", and "excuse me".

Responsible:

  • Having all school materials and supplies.
  • Giving notices to parents/guardians.
  • Returning notices as needed.
  • Staying on task.
  • Finishing assignments.
  • Staying in his/her assigned seat or area.

Cooperative:

  • Sharing materials as needed.
  • Participating in all activities.
  • Following directions the first time they are given.
  • Listening to others.

Able to Solve Problems Appropriately:

  • Encouraging self discipline.
  • Asking for help.
  • Listening to the opinions of others.
  • Keeping calm.
  • Finding peaceful solutions.
  • Apologizing when needed.
Student Guidelines
While students have rights that are not lost when they go to school, rules exist in school to make sure that the rights of one individual is balanced with the rights of all others.

The following rules apply to students and staff at City Springs Elementary School, and are good examples for all to follow:

Rule 1: Follow directions at all times.

Rule 2: Sit in your LLP (Listening and Learning Position).

Rule 3: Raise your hand and wait patiently.

Rule 4: Stay on task in your own space.

Rule 5: Respect the rights and property of others.

While is should be unnecessary for students to receive incentives for following our five school-wide rules, we want to recognize and identify those students who do this consistently. Please look for your children to bring home a Daily Point Sheet. Students who receive eight or more points a day will receive a small trinket or candy. At the end of the week, students with eighty or more points will be able to select special prizes.

If your child does not give you a Daily Point Sheet, please contact your child's teacher to find out the reason why.
